For as long as she can remember, American artist Shelia Rogers has been drawn to the ocean. She used to collect shells during long walks on the beach in her hometown of Corpus Christi, a city on the Gulf Coast in Texas. Over time, she realized that more and more plastic waste was washing up on the shore – a worrying development.

So instead of collecting shells, Rogers began to collect plastic. She brings it back to her studio, where she cleans it and sorts it by colour. She then arranges hundreds of small pieces of plastic in Plexiglas cases, resulting in quadratic, monochrome, and three-dimensional compositions. Shelia Rogers’ art shows everyday items outside of their original context and, in doing so, challenges our visual expectations. From a distance, these photographic works seem like abstract paintings. On closer inspection, and with a knowledge of their origins, the images begin to tell stories.

The interplay of colour, form, and texture makes each piece a unique adventure for the viewer. Yet it is not just the aesthetic appeal of these richly coloured images that is important. The artist’s goal is to draw attention to threats facing the ocean. Whatever we throw into the sea comes back to haunt us – washed up on the shore and also through the food chain. Shelia Rogers’ Oceans of Plastic is not only a reflection of the circle of life, but also the fragility of nature.
